Master course (international track) “Evidence-Based Education”
This course offers an advanced and comprehensive introduction to the program of the Evidence-Based Education track. The focus of the course – and connecting thread of the track – is the issue of bridging research and educational practice. Students will reflect on the goals and processes of school improvement at diverse levels (macro, meso and micro) of the educational structure. Not only will students be able to distinguish what works from what doesn’t, but perhaps more importantly they will be able to critically assess the conditions under which these reforms and interventions are successful. The probabilities of success of interventions – attested by improved outcomes – depend on processes that occur at different, nested layers of the educational structure: the macro level of policy development, the meso level of management and leadership within educational organizations, and the micro level of teaching and classroom processes.

Research master course “Education and Society”
The aim of this course is to critically reflect upon the role that educational institutions have in shaping individual life and societal changes, and how various theories describe and explain this intricate relation. The focus is on meso- and macro-aspects of the educational system, therefore addressing main issues related to educational policy-making and organization both at national and school levels. At both levels a crucial question is whether and to what extent educational excellence comes hand in hand with educational equity. Educational excellence refers to the aim of education to successfully promote the development of individual’s potential in those skills that are necessary for a productive integration in society (academic, cognitive, socio-affective skills). Educational equity, on the other hand, refers to the goal of overcoming disparities in the educational opportunities and outcomes, with particular emphasis on marginalized social groups. The discussion will address political, economic and cultural tensions and demands that constantly challenge the capacity of educational institutions to accomplish these goals.
